The point of these types of fantastic adventures – the dozens of “Conan the Barbarian” books or the 1979 three out of four book “Fires of Azeroth” from which the world of “Warcraft” takes its name – is not to revel in his victories but move on to the next quest, always in pursuit of the next adventure. The origin of the “Warcraft” universe does not focus on humans because their history is not as interesting as that of the Orcs. Their existence alongside normal infantrymen ensures that these ordinary men serve the same purpose they do in the game: as contrasting backdrops.

The movie would suffer if the orcs and bone-crushing mages had nothing to contrast with, as it would if the wicked wizard’s fel magic weren’t so intimidating. There is a reason we leave the tavern when we start our adventures. “Dungeons and Dragons” has not maintained its popularity because of its thoughtful take on the human condition, but the intermingling of what is different and familiar. People usually don’t role-play for the human stories, but to see them intertwined with the fantastic right next to them. Multiple quotes from “Game Over” have been nailed to a coffin by critics deaf to scratched protests from the successful adaptation inside.įirst, a reflection on the purpose of “World of Warcraft” for gamers. Those who have spoken out against the film adaptation cite its hokey story, mashed cut, and bland humans as signs of an adaptation apocalypse. I have spent hundreds and hundreds of hours in the world, enjoying its unique sensibilities and influences. I was the type that raided all night with forty people I had never met who lived everywhere from Cairo to London. Yes, at the expense of an otherwise thriving social life, I played “World of Warcraft” and the many adjacent Blizzard games in high school and college, becoming far too familiar with the story, gameplay and Azeroth’s artistic style.
